Why Cola is Bad, and Some Alternative Drinks For Better Sleep

We probably don’t need to list all the reasons why Coca-Cola is bad. Most are aware of its absurd sugar content which wreaks havoc on several of the body’s systems. But there are a few reasons to stop drinking this beverage, and other sodas like it, that you may not have considered.

Consider the following consequences of drinking soda regularly:

  • Decreased kidney function
  • Increased diabetes risk
  • Dehydration
  • Caramel coloring in colas may be dangerous, tied to cancers and vascular issues.
  • Caffeine blocks absorption of magnesium.
  • Dental enamel can wear away
  • Worsened metabolism

When it comes to sleep, Coca-Cola and other caffeinated beverages are terrible. Caffeine blocks sleep-inducing chemicals in the brain, and can increase adrenaline function. This effect persists for several hours, meaning it can easily disrupt sleep. Perhaps most worrisome, however, is that studies show caffeine consumption can lead to physical dependence on the drug.

Alternatives to Cola

Water is the best thing to drink regularly, but if that just isn’t your thing, there are hundreds of better options before cola. Try a slice of lemon or strawberry in ice water.

Kombucha is one drink that is increasing in popularity that is much better than soda. In fact, it’s probably not fair to Kombucha to compare it to soda. This fermented drink contains good bacteria and acids that can aid digestion and help the body out in other ways. Kefir, a yogurt-like drink, is another great source of probiotics and a good beverage to try.

Here are some other drinks to try that may help you sleep better:

  • Teas: Chamomile, Lavender, Passionflower
  • Tart Cherry Juice
  • Almond Milk, Almond Butter, Banana Smoothie (magnesium content can help sleep), or Almond milk with dates

A warning, however: look for added sugars before you purchase and drink these beverages. Added sugars can make it harder to sleep, and negate the positive nutritional value of these drinks.
